Maine Coon kittens are rife with legends. There are some people that believe that the Maine Coon is the product of early domesticated cats mating with wild bobcats. There is another rumor that the name comes from a domestic cat mating with a raccoon.
While both legends are fun to talk about, neither is true. The reason it is not true is because they are both genetically impossible ideas. In any event, if you love the Maine Coon cat then you already know about their lovable nature.
You know that they are considered the dogs of the cat world because they actively seek human companionship and you know that they are large with tufted fur feet and bobcat-like ears. They are large cats that are affectionate.
What you want to know is how much should you pay for a Maine Coon kitten. The answer is “it varies”.

Breeders
Making sure that you choose a CFA certified breeder should be your first step in making sure that the cat that you get is actually a Maine Coon kitten. A lot of cats look like a Maine Coon cat and if you have not had any real experience with the breed you may be easily duped into paying a lot of money for a cat that is in fact only a lookalike. You also want to be sure that the kittens are vaccinated and have had at least one trip to the vet. Many breeders do their own vaccines, which is fine but you still want a health certificate from a vet.
You can expect to pay anywhere between $400-$1500 for a kitten. Catteries typically breed for show; it is a very expensive hobby and selling off the “pet” kittens is commonly used as a way to offset some of the costs. A good breeder is not really “in it” for profit. They want to make sure that the kittens go to a good home and that they will be well cared for.
Be prepared to have to agree to have the kitten spayed or neutered and not to use the kitten to breed. Most reputable breeders want to keep the line to themselves and do not want to have kittens that are mixed breed associated with their cattery or their line of Maine Coon cats.
Be suspect of any breeder that offers you Maine Coon kittens for less than $400 (that is typically the low end of pricing range).
